For the spirea I would instead suggest Itea virginica
For the false holly, try the soft Ilex glabra (need 2 to berry)
For the griseum you might pick a native dogwood for red fall color or a river birch for exfoliating bark.
Lets try to use native plants wherever possible.

This is such a WONDERFUL idea and would be so much more fun to do as a group instead of struggling along by ones' self. Kudos to all of you (and to those who would help others, wherever you may be: )

Makes my heart joyful that you all did this. I thought about it but procrastinated too long. Can barely keep up with my own garden, but would love to participate to keep this garden going, or tackle another with friends. Amazing act of kindness. -Linda

The fun that I had is immeasurable. I can't thank George enough for thinking about doing this for a friend who always had such a beautiful yard. This is something I will always cherish and hope to do more of.

Thanks for the memories....

Nice post Laura! Love the photography too! Maybe we'll have a nice long, beautiful autumn like we had with spring, however, I am not ready to say good bye to summer yet. I wish you could "sustain" the summer and fall growing seasons to totaly bypass winter, so we could move right into spring again! Now that's my idea of "sustainable farming!" :]

Thanks Mike! Also thanks for the added ideas for great plant combinations. I don't know that I am personally any good at it, I just know what looks good when I see it and what doesn't!
If the weather keeps this up, good and not so good combinations will be toast! I wonder if they can then be considered as monochromatic??!?! :]

Once again Sue a great article. I especially like the photos. It is always easier for me to see a combination someone else has planted than to try to use the color wheel. A few of my favorite combinatations are Heruchera Plum Pudding ( or any of the new reds) and Japanese Painted fern Athyrium niponicum. For a shaddy spot this works great. Driving in our neighborhood I saw a nice combination, Knock Out Rose - pink and a blue Salvia, Salvia May Night or the annual Salvia Victoria Blue.
Once again - I have enjoyed the information I have learned - Keep Cool - Mike
